Whether meta-descriptions influence website ranks, this is questionable but still, it’s a fact that top SEO blogs suggest that meta-descriptions should be used as a general SEO tip.
It seems like most official blogs agree that yes, meta-description is not so important when it comes to actual rankings in search results, but they are still very useful when it comes to user click-throughs. User click throughs in this case are clicks based on what the visitor sees in the meta-description to decide whether to visit a website or not. It basically enables the websites to advertise their value to the search engine users and lure them in to visit their page. Needless to say, if meta-description is poor or irrelevant with what they are searching for, users will disregard it and click on something else.
The question here is, do top SEO websites and blogs use meta-descriptions? How do they exactly use them? The answer is YES, although not all SEO blogs use meta-descriptions on the same manner. For example:
- Websites that write about SEO like SEOmoz do use general meta-descriptions on their home and about us pages but the same thing doesn’t seem to apply to their blog posts
- Search Engine Watch seems to have a similar approach with SEOmoz, in which meta-description is used in the home page but not in blog posts
- The website of Search Engine Land uses a broad meta-description on their home page and occasionally in their blog posts.
- SEO book doesn’t seem to use a meta-description in their homepage and blog posts but they use it sometimes on their inside page.
- Finally, Search Engine Journal, uses a short meta-description in their home page but posts are excluded.
